Easy Movement School is the name I chose for my business. In my sessions I teach the principles of the Alexander Technique. I refer to them as Easy Movement principles as people usually have a concept of movement. It is in the sessions that I make reference to Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869 - 1955) and the discoveries he made about human functioning. You can read more about. this F M Alexander below. I chose 'School' to convey that we are learning something new (or unlearning a something old) and will need to approach Easy Movement in the way would approach learning a language or a musical instrument or yoga.
THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
The Alexander Technique has been taught around the world for over 100 years. Its origins lie with Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869 - 1955), a Tasmanian actor/reciter, whose voice loss and strain threatened to end his stage career. After the remedies of the day failed, he looked at the possibility that he was doing something during performance that caused his problem. After much self-observation he realised he didn't have a voice problem. He had a problem of tension in his whole body that had been so much part of him that he had been completely unaware of it. He also realised that his voice problem was really a symptom of his whole body problem. Up until that point, and even today, people rarely consider that it could be something they are doing that is causing a problem, whether it's a bad back or difficulty swimming. Alexander found a process that resolved not only the voice problem but also other conditions which he had suffered since childhood. The popularity of his Technique developed initially among musicians and actors who found it could enhance performance, and then spread more generally as a process to help reduce or resolve physical discomfort, postural issues and stress management.
ARE THE SESSIONS COVID SAFE?
Traditionally the Technique has been taught using hands-on guidance and verbal instruction. Over the past few years and in particular this year (due to COVID), a new approach to teaching has been required which includes guidance without touch. For several years I have been involved with non touch teaching which I believe and my students find is a powerful and empowering learning process. During this period access to venues and the session will be conducted in line with COVID precautions.
I'M NOT FIT. ARE THE SESSIONS STRENUOUS?
In Easy Movement sessions we will explore everyday activities in a mindful and low intensity way so that habitual muscular movement patterns are not brought into play. As participants master Easy Movement concepts - speed and intensity can be increased where required (ie fitness activities, musicianship, repetitive movements like computing, etc.). Participants are encouraged to look after their wellbeing and assess whether activities are suitable for them.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT TO YOGA, PILATES, FELDENKRAIS OR OTHER METHODS?
Movement practices often have similar aims of encouraging qualities like balance, resilience, strength and mindfulness. Many beneficial forms of movement practise are based on specific movement sequences or exercises to achieve this aim. Easy Movement however is not sequence or exercise-based. Rather, it asks for the student to be aware of how ANY movement could be made in a way that is more coordinated and moves closer to how a human is designed to move. In this way, you can apply the principles of Easy Movement to any activity.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT?
Maintaining, increasing or improving our mobility is important at any age. Learn to use it so you don't lose it! Call Shelley Kaye if you would like to discuss your situation.
I hAVE A BAD BACK, KNEES, pOOR BALANCE...cAN I DO IT?
In Easy Movement sessions you may start to discover that there are certain movements that you make that are associated with your discomfort or that lead you out of balance. It is only when a habit is brought to light that you can change it. Easy Movement provides tools for change including a way to learn to observe your habits. Many peope have found Easy Movement helps to identify movements that contribute to pain or tension. Moving in a natural way can help to improve balance issues and reduce or resolve pain issues. It is wise to consult with your medical or other practitioner prior to the session if you have underlying conditions or are concerned about your ability to participate.
WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIVATE & GROUP sESSIONS?
Both types of sessions offer great opportunities for learning and change. Private online sessions have the benefit of an approach tailored to the specific needs of the student. Group classes explore activities and movements that commonly cause issues for people. Groups offer the benefit of students being able to see habits in others that they cannot perceive in themself.
WILL EASY MOVEMENT FIX MY BAD POSTURE?
Generally what people refer to as ‘bad posture’ is a result of various long term movement habits which are hidden from their conscious view. In Easy Movement sessions we learn about how the body is meant to move and we learn to move in that direction. Rather than trying to substitute ‘bad posture’ with ‘good posture’ we instead over time seek coordination, balance and self-support.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Easy Movement is like learning an instrument or driving a car. In this case you are learning to drive yourself in a way that is often much more gentle and mindful than usual and that takes some practise. It is possible to acquire some helpful concepts from several sessions but in reality a series of sessions is more common for lasting change. It is useful to approach the learning as you would a language, a musical instrument or yoga. There are various sessions types on offer.
WHAT IS BODY MAPPING?
In order to change something we need to know the direction we want to head in. It is useful to know about how the body is meant to work so we can head in that direction. Simply put, Body Mapping introduces us to the reality of how we are meant to move, based on the internal framework of our skeletal and other structures. You will find it easy and interesting. And of course I welcome questions.
I'M SEEING A PHYSIOTHERAPIST, CHIROPRACTOR OR OSTEOPATH.
Often some of these practitioners will have heard of the Alexander Technique and be open to developing a movement plan for the student which meets the aims of both disciplines. Please discuss your situation with me. I would be happy to consult with your existing practitioner.
IS EASY MOVEMENT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.
We can learn a lot from children who mostly have poised posture when young. Over time, children start to lose that poise. Children and young adults can benefit from Easy Movement. Contact me to discuss the options. The sessions advertised on this website are not suitable for children.
WHAT WILL I WEAR
Comfortable clothing is best. Pants or leggings are also recommended. We often take our shoes and socks off (if weather permits) but this is not mandatory. If you do choose to keep footwear on please ensure it has a low heel.
